BHP Billiton has won the coveted Innovation
of the Year award at the prestigious
Energy Risk Awards 2006 in Houston. BHP Billiton
has created an enterprise visualization
system, partnering with Oculus, for
analysis, planning and what-if scenarios across
the company-wide portfolio. A strategic planning
tool forecasts scenarios across individual projects,
years out in time, and incorporates variables
down to the granularity of regional weather conditions,
plotting the effects across the company-wide
portfolio. The enterprise visualization system
analyses variations, risk models, and explains
and communicates them to senior management. Chip
Goodyear, BHP Billiton's CEO, notes that it is
not feasible to understand the variations of
scenario analysis for a large company without
the use of a tool for assimilation. Using visualisations,
many more alternate scenarios can be explored
in greater detail and more insight can be achieved
than with spreadsheets. Critical decision-making
is improved.
